SPRING SENSORY PLAY IDEAS
Spring is here, and the world just got a lot more interesting for your baby.
There's something about this time of year that makes sensory exploration feel like a lot less effort. On a sunny day especially, the textures, the sounds, the light, it's all just there, waiting. And for a baby whose brain is working harder than it ever will again to make sense of the world, spring is genuinely one of the best playgrounds there is.
Here are some of our favourite ways to make the most of it.
Take them outside and just stop
You don't need a plan, and you don't need activities. Find a patch of grass, put down a playmat, and let your baby take it in. Pull back the hood of the pram so they can feel the breeze and see the tress, let their toes touch the grass, and just be there with them. The sound of birds, wind in the leaves, the warmth of spring light on their skin, these are all new and brilliant inputs for a brain that is building connections at a remarkable rate.
Pause longer than feels natural, because babies need time to process, and honestly, so do you.

Sensory play isn't always playing
This is worth saying, because the pressure to do sensory activities can feel a bit much. Most of the time, sensory play is just life experienced a little more intentionally. It's putting them on a playmat in the garden and letting them look at the sky. It's letting them feel the difference between a smooth stone and a rough piece of bark. It's stopping on a walk to listen to something together, pointing gently toward a bird or a rustling tree so they begin to understand that the world has depth and direction. You don't need to buy anything or plan anything, you just need to slow down a little and both take it all in.
Get hands on with texture
Gently run their fingers or toes over grass, petals, bark, the contrast between soft and rough, smooth and scratchy, is exactly the kind of information their developing nervous system is looking for. You can bring it indoors too, a simple basket with feathers, a smooth stone, a piece of bark and some flowers gives them something to explore whatever the weather, just supervise closely and enjoy watching them figure it out.

Let nature do the work
For babies under 5 months, high contrast is still what their visual system responds to most strongly, and spring is actually full of it if you look for it. A flower with a dark centre, the edge of a leaf against the sky, light and shadow through a tree. Nature is crammed full of patterns and babies love them. Find those moments, hold your baby close so they can really see, and let them linger. You'll know when something has caught their attention.
From the Sussex Baby Lab
Make the most of warmer days with our outdoor play mat
Our outdoor playmat was made for exactly this, somewhere clean and comfortable for your baby to lie, look, kick and explore while you both soak up a little spring sunshine. Pop it on the lawn, the patio, or take it to the park or beach. It's one of those things that once you have it, you'll wonder how you managed without it.
And don't forget yourself
Getting outside is good for your baby, but it's good for you too, and that part doesn't get said enough. Even a short walk, even just sitting on the back step with them while they look at the garden, counts. If you use our affirmations cards, they make a lovely companion for gentle head turning exercises, something for your baby to track while you read the words out loud and remind yourself, genuinely, that you are doing a brilliant job.
Why it matters
Every new texture, sound, colour and sensation your baby encounters this spring is helping their brain form connections that underpin everything that comes next. Sensory play isn't an activity you schedule, it's just life, experienced intentionally.
At Etta Loves, everything we make is designed to support that, with patterns developed with our consultant Orthoptist Laura and tested at the University of Sussex Baby Lab to make sure they actually work for developing vision, not just look good.
Spring is short. Get out while you can.
