the science of sight
what babies can actually see
A newborn's world is blurry, muted and wonderfully small. They see most clearly at around 20-30cm from their face, but colour is soft, edges are gentle, and high contrast is everything. In their first year, vision develops faster than at any other point in life, from that hazy, muted beginning to focused, vibrant and full of wonder by their first birthday.

Born into a blur
A newborn's retina isn't fully developed. This means they can only detect large contrasts between light and dark, which is why high contrast patterns are so powerful from day one.
It's not that they only see in black and white, as a strong red can register from birth, but subtle colours, soft tones and fine detail are invisible to them for months.
Their world is bold shapes, high contrast, and not much else.

Babies have to learn how to see
Vision isn't passive, it's built through use. Every time a baby focuses on something interesting, new connections form between their eyes and brain.
Patterns are especially powerful: research shows babies need patterned input for proper cognitive development. From lines and stripes in the early weeks, to round shapes and bullseyes by two months, to spotting the odd one out by four months - their visual appetite, and ability, grows rapidly.

Colour comes later than you think
By 2-3 months, strong blues and greens start to register, but subtle colour differences - the kind adults take for granted - don't come until much later.
Which is why what looks beautiful to you might be invisible to your baby. And why every colour decision we make at Etta Loves is led by what your baby can actually perceive right now. Save the pastels for bedtime.

HELPING THEM LEARN TO SEE
Babies learn best when something is just challenging enough to hold their attention - not so simple it's boring, but not so complex that it's overwhelming.
Getting that balance right is everything. It's why we work with our visual experts, so that everything we design is built around exactly that knowledge. Giving you the confidence that whatever age your baby is, they're looking at exactly what they need to see.

HOW WE DESIGN
Every pattern starts with a question. What can a baby actually see right now, and what do they actually want to look at?
We design for both. Every pattern contains a range of scales matched to the age range it's for, so that patterns captivate and continue to captivate for months as vision sharpens. We also know which shapes babies prefer at each stage, so we design for what engages, not just what's visible.

TESTING THE SCIENCE
Before any pattern reaches a product, we prove it works.
Using eye tracking technology, we record exactly where babies look and how long they stay there. We also run every design through baby blur software, simulating how babies see month by month, so we can be certain every pattern is right for their eyes at every stage

FASCINATING FACTS
SPOTTING YOU
As early as 45 hours old, a newborn can recognise their mum’s face over a stranger's face.
ODD ONE OUT
From as young as 3 to 4 months old, babies show a preference for a pattern with an 'odd one out' element
MONKEYS
A 6 month old can recognise and tell apart
different monkey faces like they’d tell apart human faces, but by 9 months this ability has been lost
